Ulpotha
A village yoga retreat without electricity
About Ulpotha
Ulpotha began in 1994, when three friends revived an abandoned estate. It is a working village of paddy fields and old irrigation tanks that hosts yoga retreats for part of the year, with visiting teachers and styles such as Hatha, Vinyasa, Ashtanga, Iyengar and Yin in an open-sided shala. There is no electricity: lamps light the paths and meals are cooked over open fires. Ayurveda treatments are offered too. We describe what is offered, not health outcomes; talk to your doctor first.
Why it's on our list
