Sri Lanka’s toll expressways have cut journey times: the Colombo–Katunayake Expressway to the airport, and the Southern Expressway from Colombo past Galle to Matara and Hambantota, which puts Galle about 1.5 hours from the city. Elsewhere, roads are slower than distances suggest.
