About Driving yourself: the permit you need

Sri Lanka drives on the left. Foreign drivers need their home licence plus local recognition: a temporary Sri Lankan permit from the Department of Motor Traffic (DMT) counter at Bandaranaike International Airport or its Werahera office, or an International Driving Permit endorsed by the Automobile Association of Ceylon (AA Ceylon) in Colombo. Tuk-tuks need a permit from Werahera. Police have warned that foreigners driving without a valid permit will be prosecuted, and insurance may not cover you. Fees and documents change, so check with the DMT or AA Ceylon (aaceylon.lk) before you travel.

Why it's on our list
