About The Dutch canal (Hamilton Canal)

The canal that runs through Negombo was begun by the Dutch to move cinnamon and other goods along the coast, and extended under the British, when it became known as the Hamilton Canal. Today it is lined with fishing boats and village houses, and makes a gentle bike ride or boat trip from the town.
