About Koneswaram Temple

Koneswaram Temple stands on Swami Rock, a cliff above the sea at the end of the Fort Frederick headland. It is one of the most revered Hindu temples in Sri Lanka, dedicated to Shiva. The road up passes through Fort Frederick, built by the Portuguese and later used by the Dutch and the British. Remove shoes, dress modestly, and visit during puja (prayer) times for the music and ritual.
