Arugam Bay is Sri Lanka’s best-known surf spot, with its season from about May to October. The main point break is for experienced surfers; beginners are taught at the softer breaks nearby, such as Baby Point, where the water is shallow and the waves forgiving. Many schools in the village offer lessons and board hire: look for qualified instructors (such as those certified by the International Surfing Association), small groups and soft-top boards, and check the tide, as some breaks are shallow over rock at low tide.
