Learning to surf in Weligama
Gentle beginner waves
About Learning to surf in Weligama
Weligama’s bay has long, gentle waves over a sandy bottom, ideal for a first lesson, and dozens of schools and board-rental stands line the beach from about November to April. Look for instructors with a recognised qualification (such as the International Surfing Association’s), small groups, a soft-top board and a rash vest, and ask how long you will spend in the water. Surf in the morning, before the wind picks up, use reef-safe sun cream and respect the local surfers’ order in the line-up. Ceylon Sliders, a surf hotel and shop on the bay at No 9 Galle Road, rents boards.
