Tangalle, the back story
The back story

About Tangalle, the back story
Tangalle is a fishing town at the eastern end of the south coast, with long, empty beaches either side and small coves such as Hiriketiya to the west. It is quieter than Mirissa and Unawatuna, and home to several of the island’s most celebrated beach hotels.
The beaches
Long stretches of golden sand run east and west of the town, backed by palms and lagoons. Goyambokka and the beaches around the headlands are sheltered in places.
Hiriketiya
West of Tangalle near Dikwella, the little horseshoe bay of Hiriketiya has gentle surf and relaxed cafés, and has become one of the most popular spots on the coast.
Tangalle is where the south coast slows down: hammocks, empty sand and the sound of the surf.
Mulkirigala
Inland, the rock temple of Mulkirigala rises from the plain, with cave temples on several levels and wide views from the top.
Nearby wildlife
Rekawa, east of Tangalle, is a nesting beach for sea turtles, and Bundala and Yala national parks are within reach for a safari.
Swimming
Many of Tangalle’s beaches have strong waves and currents. Swim only where locals do, in the calm months, and never alone.
Our advice: come to Tangalle for the last few nights of a trip, when you want space and silence, and combine it with a safari in Yala or Bundala.
