About Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara

Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara, on the Kelani River just outside the city, is one of the most revered Buddhist temples in Sri Lanka. Its image house is covered with 20th-century murals telling Buddhist stories and the island’s history. On the January full moon it holds the Duruthu Perahera, a procession with dancers and drummers. Dress in white or modest clothes and remove your shoes.
