The back story

About Ella, the hill village at the end of the line, the back story

Ella sits in a gap in the hills at the eastern edge of the highlands, with views down to the plains. The train through the tea country makes it one of the most popular stops in Sri Lanka; in late 2026 the scenic stretch runs from Nanu Oya to Ella, with Kandy reached by road.

The bridge

The Nine Arch Bridge at Demodara, built of stone and brick in the British era, curves through the jungle; time your visit with a passing train.

The walks

Little Adam’s Peak is an easy walk of about an hour through tea gardens to a summit with wide views. Ella Rock is longer and steeper; go with a guide or good directions.

Arriving in Ella by train, after a day of tea estates and tunnels, is one of the great journeys of Asia.

Safety

Walking on the railway line is dangerous; stay clear of the tracks when trains are due.

Our advice: walk Little Adam’s Peak at sunrise, visit the bridge early before the crowds, and book train seats on the Nanu Oya–Ella stretch as soon as bookings open, 30 days ahead.
