About Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage

Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, near Kegalle between Colombo and Kandy, is run by the Department of National Zoological Gardens. It was set up to care for orphaned and injured elephants and now keeps a large captive herd, including elephants born there. Visitors watch feeding and the herd’s daily walk to bathe in the Maha Oya river. Animal-welfare organisations have raised concerns about conditions and captive breeding, so read our elephants and turtles guide before you decide. Do not pay to touch, feed or ride elephants.

Why it's on our list

  • State-run since 1975
  • River bathing times
  • Welfare debated

Opening hours, prices and seasonal openings change, so please check with Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage before you go.
