Arugam Bay, the back story
The back story

About Arugam Bay, the back story
Arugam Bay is a small fishing and surf town near Pottuvil on the south-east coast. Its right-hand point break is one of the best-known waves in South Asia, and the season runs from about April or May to October, when the west coast is wet.
The waves
The main point break is at the southern end of the bay, with other breaks such as Whiskey Point, Elephant Rock and Peanut Farm within a short tuk-tuk ride, from beginner waves to more challenging reef breaks.
The town
A single road of guesthouses, cafés and surf shops runs along the bay. It is relaxed and casual, and busy at the height of the season in July and August.
When the south coast goes quiet for the monsoon, Arugam Bay fills with surfers.
Beyond the beach
Kumana National Park, to the south, is known for its birds, and there are lagoons with elephants and crocodiles nearby. Respect the local community: dress modestly away from the beach.
When to go
Come from about April or May to October. From about November to March, the north-east monsoon brings rain and many places close.
Our advice: book well ahead for July and August, take a lesson on the beginner breaks if you are new to surfing, and add a morning safari in Kumana.
